2008 CPS XC Championships (Complete Results)
Results from 10-06-08 Hoffman Estates "Hawk" invite (f/s boys): Mather's boys traveled up to compete in a very solid 7 team meet with some rich tradition programs. We were one man away from winning the thing. (let this be a lesson to this years frosh....two words...SUMMER MILES) the results were 1) Schumburg 55 2) Mather 72 3) York 74 4) St Charles East 92 5) Lake Park 93 6) Fenton 142 7) Hoffman Estates 148. Tons of nice efforts on the tough rolling hills Barrington Pond 5k course. Abe "the bullet" won the whole thing in 16:42 (5:12-5:41-5:20/16:13). He took control at the mile and was really suprised that nobody reacted to his move. Bana was 4th in 17:07 (5:24-5:36-5:36/16:36) he pr'd in his 3 mile inside his 5k rebounding from a poor race at savage. He ran up steadily through the crowd moving from 6th at the mile to 2nd at the 2 mile and only losing to a footrace between LP and Schumburg's #1 runners. Abdel 17:40 (5:24-6:08-5:39/17:11) and Tarik 17:44 (5:18-6:05-5:43/17:06) finished 12th and 13th of the races 49 pretty good runners. In the 2.1 race PR came from Justen whose 12:32 is a 30 sec pr and micheal do who passed 3 york runners w/ the kick that shocked the world. (pics and video coming soon:)
Location Hubs. Conversation post race over milkshakes (coaching tradition) ..... DeVinney say "well we are who we thought we were...a bubble state qual team" to which kuchnia replys "true except i'd say we are who we HOPED we were." Very True and a very good day. Our state qualifying efforts visited the race site 4 weeks in advance for the N West invite where we found the pancake flat 4834m sectional course in perfect 60 degree and sunny conditions. Our hard work was rewarded with some terrific times!! Our girls continued their rapid improvement. Teresa impressed with another top 5 finish (18:48 = 6:00-6:32-6:16) and ran an impressive 6:16 last mile to chase down some terrific runners. If she goes under 18:30 in 4 weeks she's looking at a peoria trip. Aden went out very fast early and faded late. Her impressive workouts of late have her looking like she'll run w/ teresa in coming meets (19:32 = 5:53 - 6:44 - 6:55) The pack of Marily, Ashley, and Michelle all made impressive time jumps to go into the 21's and helped our girls to finish 7th in the tough meet. On the boys side we wanted 5 under 16:20 on this date and just missed our goal. Ivan (15:46 = 5:02-5:23-5:21), Eddie (15:56 = 5:04-5:26-5:26), Omar (15:57 = 5:03-5:26-5:28), and Abe (16:09 = 5:14-5:21-5:34) all looked right on target pace and strong as usual. Justen ran top 5 again (16:29 = 5:25-5:26-5:38). He's POSITIVE in his ability to go sub 16 on this course in 4 weeks (i love senior confidence). Mikey (16:44 = 5:28-5:38-5:38), Tarik (16:49 = 5:32-5:38-5:39) and Abdel (16:50 = 5:31-5:44-5:33) all ran very strong also. Sheedy ran a PR (17:04 = 5:37-5:48-5:39) Bana was gutsy but a bit banged up (17:10). It looks at this point like we can run w/ Lake park. Throw Lane Tech and Maine South in the mix and in 4 weeks the 4 of us do battle for 2 state qual spots (behind york, fenwick, loyola). It may come down to who shows up to run big on that big day. I'll tell ya its fun to be in the mix but lets show up and get all historic and be one of those teams! Lets stay hungry for hard work. City meet is next after an off weekend.
Analysis from Young Invite (09-27-08): What a fun day. I keep saying this. this is the
most i've ever enjoyed coaching!!! The Varsity boys (pictured below) were instructed to "run like bullies"
and race for place in this soft invite. We ran in a pretty tight group and tailed the leaders through a slow mile 1
then took the race over. Of the 150 runners in the race our boys took 1,2,5,6,10,11,and 13. Not A-level racers
out there today but it was nice to be the bully. Abe won his 1st HS race and the rest of the top 4 were steady performers
as ever.. Bana and mikey had strong races but the breakthrough of the day was garth's 3 mile running as our #5 man (10th
in the meet.) Our 1-5 difference was a nice :46 sec (in fact our 1-7 was only :58). Tarik had a strong soph
race battling youngs #1 runner to the wire and finishing 2nd of 150+ soph runners :) Our Girls raced to
a third place trophy. Teresa and Aden went 5, 7 to lead us and the crew's steady improvement continues.
BIG week ahead ending w/ niles west invite on the sectional course. Great Job to All. Lets stay hungry for
hard work!!!! ![]() Mather Invite #3 Results Tuesday (09-23-08) Analysis from 09-23-08 Mather Invite 3:
The senior #1's shined bright in their last home race. Teresa blazes an even split 6:01 - 6:04 (12:05.66)
and Ivan not to be outdone goes 4:50 - 4:58 (09:48.35). As we conclude our home series we can compare us to us 07 to
08 and we show a strong improvement. Our best boy time in '07 was 10:16 and we have 4 ahead of that mark.
Analysis from 09-20-08 Girls Race: Our girls have not yet had their breakthrough. Our 3-5 girls will be low 21's when their breakthrough comes. For Teresa (20:12- 6:05,7:18,6:49) her aggressive style vs the top flight and the noon 80+ degree heat cost her in the last half of her race BUT she wouldn't be teresa if she wasn't so strong, stubborn, and aggressive. She'll break 19 in coming invites and coach brown will owe her food :) Aden had a terrific race (19:52-6:24,6:24,7:04) running at the front of the #2 flight. She looked like a 19:30 until the last 1/2 mile and will be down there soon. Analysis from 09-20-08 Boys Race: What a nice day for a race at 9 am. 65 degrees and dry. Two hours and 6 flights later its a blazing hot day at 85+. So we see some great performances from early flights and some struggles from later ones (from mather and all teams). We went into this meet wanting a trophy (top 4) which would mean we beat a few pretty good teams. Tarik led us off against the #7s and like we would all day we raced right at the front. We had goal mile splits but in this small race format you have to race the race too so to never be on an island alone doing all the work alone. Tarik PR's in 17:05 (5:20,5:46,5:59) and finishes 4th. Mikey takes #6 line fresh off a confidence busting race in peoria and rebounds to sub 17 in 16:57 (5:15, 5:31, 5:51). We were real happy w/ this race as he again looks like a sub 16 candidate in 6 weeks. Baby Bana toed the #5 line and looked GREAT. He has a bounce in his step like i've never seen from him. His 16:40 PR (5:09, 5:43, 5:48) has made us all believe this frosh has got what it takes. Abe took our #4 sticker today and raced really well. His 16:25 (5:07, 5:36, 5:42) put him 2nd in his flight as he showed a real nice competitive fire in the last 1/2 mile to not let that 2nd place medal be taken by 2 good runners. Eddie T was a Coach K pick for the 3rd slot and man did edward deliver. I thought he was breaking 16 up until 200m to go. His 16:10 (5:04, 5:35, 5:31) with a monster strong kick shows his tireless work ethic is paying dividends. Omar took the line as the high sun was scorching the kendall county corn fields. He was confident and determined that "today was sub 16". He went after it 4:55 at the mile but at the 1.5 mile was a bit heat exausted and finished in 16:16. (the training tent looked like an emergency room or the '07 chicago marathon by the #2 flight). Omar's sub 16 is VERY soon. Ivan ran in the toughest flight with 2 returning all staters who took out the field in sub 4:40(wow) in the heat. 6 runners followed and ivan did not. He ran the entire race alone in the 7 spot in 16:26. I thought (as did he) he'd run down some guys but as per our post race conversation "#1 runners are all good runners." If he had a do over (and we could have turned some air conditioning on) ivan would have went out blazing and had a big meet. I'm excited to watch this kid really let loose in coming weeks. As for our overall team six weeks ahead of sectionals we look to be the "5 under 16" team we'd planned to become. If we do that we are a bubble top 5 team and have a chance to run at the big show. EXCITING weeks ahead :)
In the open race justen ran an impressive 17:23 and soph abdel a 18:04 in the hottest race of the day. Justen keeps pressure on the top 7 and makes us a deeper team. Mather Invite #2 Results Tuesday (09-16-08)
Analysis From 09-16-08 Mather Invite #2 Upon further review Cross Country is the WORLDS GREATEST SPORT. I think a bunch of kids had a blast this date. A No Pressure, Soggy slow course, wave to mom as you go by "race". In these small tuesday meets its easy to see we're a much better team from '07. We place very low priority on strong performances but if we compare us to us from these dates we see terrific team and individual progression. One of our constant emphasis is that we are a PR sport. Here were a few from soggy legion yesterday....kudos:)
Analysis from 09-13-08: One of those races where time is out the window.(not without irony the official results are still missing times) The course was very sloppy from days of pounding rain. We took a nice crew of 17 runners who've worked to earn the trip. On the girls side our 5 girls performances were highlighted by Aden's 21:12 a PR for her despite the conditions. The other girls gained valuable experience racing tough girls in poor conditions. On the boys side we improved from our poor 29th place in '07 to 17th in '08. We were disappointed as we wanted a top 10 performance. We were one strong effort away from mixing in with the ranked teams.
11. O'Fallon 23 37 62 91 106 (136)(152) = 319 12. Edwardsville 19 50 53 85 127 (168)(188) = 334 13. Hononegah 47 65 71 72 89 (156) = 344 17. Mather(Chicago) 39 67 74 103 181 (192)(197) = 464 Our 1-4 split was a strong 49 seconds if we can make that our 1-5 or 1-6 split we are a legit team that can begin to dream big. We have the guys to do it. In training we have 4 or 5 more guys capable of getting inside that 1-5 split for us we just need to put out those great effort on saturdays and it will come. A positive we can take from this trip is that of the 7 teams from our state sectional in this invite only Loyola finished ahead of us. We need to stay excited about and energetic in our training and shift our focus to Minooka this weekend who is a top 25 school and host a nice flight style invite.
Mather Invite #1 Results Tuesday (09-09-08) Analysis from 09-09-08: Fun, Fun, Fun Racing is Fun!!! It's always nice to the young runners get their 1st race in. I'm
really happy with all the effort out there. Our theme for younger runners is "improve yourself". We
are a PR sport and your personal record is a constant goal throughout your XC career. So young runners good job! Now
work hard and get faster next Tuesday. For the veteran runners that ran remember its early in the season.
Too early to concern with what other teams and runners are doing we focus on our team and its development. For the boys
We find great positives from an '07 to '08 comparison. Last year it took until Mather invite iii for omar(10:54)
eddie (10:58) and mikey (10:59) to break 11min and they went 16:25, 16:40, 16:40 by years end. Justen (who wants everyone
to know despite what the results say he BEAT bana...and bana confirms) ran 10:53 and Bana 10:55 coming off a killer monday
workout. Our girls made strong improvements from '07 teresa cut 20 sec running a nice 12:37 and our
pack cut about :30 from last year. Nice job to all!!

Young Invite 09-22-07 Complete Results from Young Invite ![]() 09-15-07 Minooka Invite
Minooka Flight Invite is different from most races. The #7 runner from
all 20 teams runs a race against the #7 runner from each other team. The result is 7 tightly packed heated little races.
Though the course was not a fast one (as it was a woody and twisty 3 miler) times were solid. Mather's boys 2-7
were packed within 30 sec all in the 17's. Ivan was impressive at 16 flat. Willy Hernandez impressed in the open
race contesting for the win in a solid 17:34. With a speed work training cycle now beginning this team looks rock solid.
The Girls team finished higher than any lady ranger XC squad ever at Minooka. Monica led the way in a solid 19:35.
Teresa Robledo, Makini Harrison, and the Arellano sisters all raced strong again. Marily Angel (so) made her varsity
debut in an impressive 22:43 and Freshman Chequia Wesley Held the 7 spot running a top 10 24:19. Frosh Roxy Villatoro
wow'd the coaches and varsity girls running 22:40 in her first 3 mile.
A hot Day and a dead legged Low Intensity time trail led to deceivingly slow times. The Top Boys went
out in only 5:20 and the girls about a minute slower. This trial is on the heels of a 10 mile hill workout Monday and
no racing shoes were allowed. Times compared very well to one year before with the boys top 5 averaging nearly 20 sec
ahead of last year. Eddie Torres led the boys pack in (11:05). The girls 1-4 runners looked terrific also.
Monica Rodriguez led the way (13:08). Jose Gonzelez was the top Freshman in a strong (14:09). |
