2007 Top 5:  Mather (46)  Northside (47)  Lane Tech (58)

                      Lincoln Park (86)  Young (94)

2008 Team Outlook:  Same Teams Different Year. Mather looks to 3-peat as city champs.  The 3 teams that jump out and seem to have elevated their programs in ’08 are Lane, Mather, and Northside.  All three are capable of making some noise in the state series and this is the first of 3 consecutive weeks these teams do battle.  All three teams have a strong top runner and nice depth.  15+ of this races top 20 finishers may come from the big 3.  The team champion comes from the squad whose 4 and 5 man run closest to 16 flat.  This race like the ’07 version may come down to a single point.  Exciting XC for sure J

2008 Individual Outlook: (top runners in alpha order)

Ivan Coronel Sr (Mather):  The defending individual champion has run 15:47 and looks to be :30  improved from 2007.

Kulayifi Haji Jr (Lane):  Has continued to impress with his year to year improvement.  He ran 15:26early in the season in Peoria and looks for an individual city title and has sights on possible all-state honors.

Charlie Messimore So (Northside):  Has Emerged in recent weeks as his team’s #1 runner and ran an impressive 15:37 2 weeks ahead of this championship.

Jose Mora Jr (Payton):  Last Spring’s 3200m champion of the CPL looks in strong 3.0 xc shape having run 15:50 2 weeks ahead of the championship.

Race Previews:

Event:  Varsity Girls Race

2007 Top 5:  Whitney Young(45)  Northside (54)  Lane Tech (79)  Payton Prep (117)  Mather (129)

2008 Team Outlook:  Once again Whitney Young is the showcase team.  Not only are they defending CPL champions  but  they come in with a top 10 state ranking.  The only issue in doubt for the lady dolphins is the always tough perfect score. The race for the runner-up trophy, however, is anything but decided.  As many as 5 different teams figure in the race for this trophy.  Northside returns 5 of 7 girls from the ’07 runner up team and are always steady performers late in the season.  They look to keep their 4 year trophy streak going.  Lane Tech runs in a tight grouping that expects to all be in the top 20.  They come in with trophy expectations every year and have historically been very successful in their pursuit.  Morgan Park is a team that nobody can overlook in 2008.  They have a terrific top runner and strong depth.  Coach Calhoun fields a strong team looking to get their 1st xc trophy since 2002. Payton has shown flashes of brilliance in 2008 and look to improve on their 4th place ’07 finish and get into the trophy hunt.  Mather’s success as most of the above teams rests on the shoulders of their 3-5 runners.  The lady Rangers have shown a terrific 1-2 punch all season.  Overall the top end of this race and depth are much improved from recent years.  Look for an exciting top 5 individual race and a hard fought chase pack making for great XC!

2008 Individual Outlook: (top runners in alpha order)

Nyala Eddings Jr (Morgan Park): Her development into a top 3 miler this season has been impressive.  If she has the confidence to move with the top pack early don’t be surprised with a breakthrough performance.

Rachael Joravsky Jr (Whitney Young):  She’s healthy and back to running like one if if not the league’s top runner in ’08.   Many say she’s the best of the best team and who wouldn’t want to put an individual title honor on an increasingly impressive running resume.

Lavinia Jurkeiwicz Jr (Whitney Young):  2007’s PL Runner up went on to garnish all-state honors.  She’ll run in the top pack and has as much speed, strength, and stamina as any girl on the course.

Teresa Robledo Sr (Mather):  Ran an impressive 18:48 just 2 weeks prior to this championship.  Seems to be finding her great races at just the right time.

Devin Thompson Jr (Whitney Young): Two facts about Devin makes many believe she’ll repeat as champion. (1) She’s fit as ever and this all-stater will be in the top pack near races end and (2) She has blistering speed and would love the title to come to a sprinters footrace.

Maisie Vaschuska So (Whitney Young): Can’t be left off this list though she’s her own team’s #4 runner.  She may well finish 4th in CPS also.  Remember her ’07 breakthrough came in this very race.

Ani Zotti Sr (Northside):   The top runner on a good team Ani ran 6th in ’07 and is always a steady performer with 800m finishing speed.  She cannot be overlooked.
