The
last time the Rangers competed at the State Championship was in 2001 when the automated city bid was still around. The Rangers
finished last on that day and haven’t been able to redeem that disappointing finish ever since. This group of talented
boys decided to change history for Ranger Cross Country, and did so by placing 13th overall in the Class 2A State Championship
meet.
On
the day of the race, the boys got together for one last huddle before the start. The gun went off shortly after; the Rangers
top 3 immediately moved up to the front of the race, like they have so many times throughout the season. Haji had positioned
himself in the top 10, while Tahiraj and Negash pushed their way into the top 30. The boys crossed the mile mark in 4:48,
4:51 and 4:55 respectively. Flores and Maldanado worked together through the first mile running 5:12-5:17. While Gaona and
Ahmed came through in 5:20-5:22.
The boys headed straight into the triangle and put heavy surges in around
the mile and a half mark. At this point the Rangers were in the top 10 and fighting to keep that position. Crossing the 2
mile mark, the teams started to battle, throwing elbows and bumping one another. Approaching the 2.5 mile mark the boys faded
but still managed to hold down the 13th spot.
Colon was the lone representer for the Lady Rangers. At the mile,
Colon came through in 6:13. She crossed the 2 mile mark in 13:31 and headed around the park for one last mile. Colon put on
heavy surges and crossed the line in 20:36, recording a P.R for herself.
The Rangers Cross country season has now ended and their
focus has diverted to the track and field season.
